DKK 10.3 million for Greenlandic documentariesThe Greenland Film Institute awards DKK 10 million for Greenlandic documentary
films
The Greenland Film Institute is delighted to announce that DKK 10 million in funding is
now being awarded for the production of documentary films in Greenland.
The funding gives Greenlandic filmmakers a historic opportunity to develop and produce
more documentary films that tell stories about our society, culture and future – with a
Greenlandic voice.
“This is a historic opportunity to strengthen the Greenlandic documentary sector and give
more filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories that are important to our society, our
culture and our future – told in our own Greenlandic voice. It means a great deal that we now
have the opportunity to elevate and bring greater visibility to more of the stories that originate
in Greenland,” says the Chairperson of the Greenland Film Institute – Malik Kleist.
The allocation marks an important step in the development of a stronger and more sustainable
Greenlandic film industry. At the same time, the Greenland Film Institute hopes that this
funding can be the beginning of a larger and more long-term investment in Greenlandic film.
“We are very grateful for this opportunity, and at the same time, we hope that it can be the
beginning of a larger and more long-term investment in Greenlandic film. We also strongly
hope that funding can be made available in the future to support the development and
production of Greenlandic feature films, so that we can strengthen the entire film industry.”
Says Malik Kleist.
The DKK 10 million comes from funds transferred from the Danish Finance Act. Since
taking over the funds, the Greenland Film Institute has worked purposefully to establish the
framework for the funding scheme, including preparing guidelines, completing the website
and developing a new application portal.
“The major task has been to take over the funds from Denmark, prepare the guidelines,
complete the website and, not least, develop the associated application portal as quickly as
possible. Many Greenlandic documentary filmmakers have been waiting for us to open
applications for these funds. Now, at long last, we can open for applications,” says the CEO
of the Film Institute, Inunnguaq Petrussen.
With the new funding, more opportunities are now opening up for Greenlandic documentary
filmmakers and producers. The aim is to create better conditions for the development and
production of films, strengthen local talent and ensure that more Greenlandic stories can
reach both Greenlandic and international audiences.
A new funding opportunity for filmmaking is also in the pipeline and will be announced in
the coming period, once the necessary regulations have entered into force.
The application period for the funding scheme is 24 August to 24 September 2026.
